Saigon development and construction

The east/west highway

The largest single infrastructure project in Ho Chi Minh city is the the east/west highway.

  • Key points
  • 21.89 KM in length
  • Runs through districts 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, Binh Tan and Binh Chanh
  • Construction started 31/05/2005
  • is to have 10 lanes
  • Starts at Cat Lai junction in D2 ends at highway 1A at Binh Chanh
  • Includes a tunnel under the Saigon river (under construction)

When complete this highway will take huge stress off the city’s overloaded roads. Cat Lai is home to a very busy shipping port so this highway will be a huge relief for truck drivers who at the moment have to make their way through the busy streets where motorbike riders tend to give them very little consideration.  Trucks are also banned from the city roads at rush hours.
